The diurnal rhythm of the stomatal aperture size was investigated using isolated epidermal strips from a CAM plant, Notonia grandiflora. Maximal stomatal opening occurred at pH 6.5. The nocturnal stomatal opening was stimulated by KCl which produced stomatal closure in light. The stimulatory effect of KCl on stomatal opening in darkness was suppressed by ABA.
