The effects of kinetin and ABA application before or after heat shock were studied by determining the following parameters: CO_2 fixation, leucine incorporation into protein and leakage of ^<36>Cl or ^<14>C-labeled metabolites. Kinetin pretreatment increased the heat damage while post-treatment enhanced recovery. ABA pretreatment did not reduce heat damage while post-treatment enhanced recovery, but to a lesser extent than kinetin. These findings are not consistent with the assumption that ABA plays a role in increasing the resistance of plants to stresses.
