The influence of light and endogenous plant-growth regulators on the evolution of α- and β-amylases in cotyledons of Phaseolus vulgaris L. was investigated. Both enzymes, which are not present in ungerminated seeds, appear during germination of intact seedlings or incubation of excised cotyledons. α-Amylase activity decreases upon exposure to light. This inhibition is correlated with a drastic increase in chlorophyll content and a change in the endogenous gibberellin-inhibitor balance. β-Amylase activity was not affected by light treatment but was by the presence of endogenous cytokinins.
