The effects of peeling the epidermis off Bryophyllum daigremontianum leaves on CO_2 uptake in light and darkness were investigated. Light-induced CO_2 uptake in the daytime was markedly enhanced in the peeled leaves, but dark fixation of CO_2 carried out at midnight was not. The difference in promotion of CO_2 uptake in light and darkness was due to stomatal closing in the day and opening at night. Also, deacidification was strikingly inhibited by CO_2 in peeled leaves.
