Non-dormant small cocklebur seeds (Xanthium pennsylvanicum Wallr.) are potentiated to germinate, if they are subjected to anaerobic condition for certain time periods after being sufficiently pre-soaked under aerobic conditions. This is termed "anaerobic induction" of seed germination. Such induction was slightly inhibited by CO_2 applied during anaerobiosis, but markedly promoted by C_2H_4. Thus, C_2H_4 can exert its action even in anaerobiosis, but does not enhance the fermentative CO_2 evolution. No actual anaerobic induction occurred when over 1% O_2 was present, even if C_2H_4 had been applied. Therefore, anaerobic induction seems to be due to a concerted action of some anaerobically proceeding events and the anaerobically produced C_2H_4.
