Avena leaf protoplasts from varieties susceptible (cv. Park) and resistant (cv. Victory) to victorin incorporate the label from ^3H-L-leucine ^3H-uridine and ^3H-thymidine into trichloroacetic acid-insoluble materials at comparable rates. When incubated in the presence of the toxin, susceptible protoplasts begin to lyse after a short period of time; the effect on resistant protoplasts is minimal. Victorin also significantly reduces in-corporation of label from leucine and to a lesser extent from uridine and thymidine into susceptible protoplasts but has a negligible effect on resistant protoplasts. Pretreatment of susceptible leaves with cycloheximide but not kinetin protects against the sub-sequent action of victorin on apparent protein synthesis and lysis of protoplasts.
