When embryonic axes excised from Red Kidney beans are exposed to thermal shock freezing extremes of pH and organic solvents they lose their capability for growth and their membrane integrity. Growth was measured in terms of axis ex-tension; membrane changes were expressed in terms of α-amylase leakage. Exceptions to the close relations between "leakiness" and loss of viability were exposure to toxic levels of auxins and metabolic poisons.
