On etiolated cuttings of Phaseolus vulgaris malformin inhibited several phytochrome-mediated responses. This included hypocotyl hook-opening, leaf expansion, and inhibition of stem elongation. Malformin also inhibited anthocyanin synthesis by sorghum, but had no effect upon lettuce seed germination in the light or dark. Malformin alleviated Ethrel-induced hook-retention, inhibition of stem elongation, and root curvatures, but not Ethrel-induced stimulation of lettuce seed germination in the dark.
