The effect of the embryo axis and various growth substances on amylase activity in cotyledons of germinating peas was studied. The embryo axis brought about an elevation in the level of enzyme activity. Gibberellic acid, kinetin, benzyladenine and zeatin riboside also promoted the activity, but none of these substances brought about a full replacement of the axis. Such a replacement was caused by zeatin or by a simultaneous application of zeatin riboside and gibberellic acid, The results suggest that the regulative effect of the embryo axis on amylase activity in cotyledons is brought about either by zeatin alone or a cooperative action of a cytokinin (or several cytokinins) and a gibberellin (or several gibberellins).
