In tobacco leaf disks floated on water in the dark, chloroplast rRNA (23S and 16S rRNA) decreased rapidly, and this decrease was inhibited by 10^<-6> M BA. The cytoplasmic rRNA (25S and 18S rRNA) level changed little during a few days of dark in-cubation regardless of the presence or absence of BA. Cycloheximide at 10^<-5> M completely removed the effect of BA. Chloroplast rRNA and cytoplasmic rRNA respectively decreased and increased during a 4-day culture in the light, and BA had no influence on these light effects.
