2-(4-Chlorophenylthio) triethylamine hydrochloride (CPTA) induced the accumulation of a number of carotenes in pumpkin (Cucurbita moschata) cotyledons, a tissue which does not normally accumulate these pigments. Lycopene accumulated concomitantly with a decrease in a-carotene and β-carotene. CPTA appeared to inhibit cyclases involved in the synthesis of a-carotene and β-carotene and to stimulate enzymes involved in lycopene synthesis. Cycloheximide reduced this CPTA induced enzyme synthesis while diphenylamine reduced CPTA induced carotene accumulation. Actinomycin D alone reduced accumulation of carotenes, but it did not affect CPTA induced carotene accumulation. Rather lutein, violoxanthin and neoxanthin decreased and a-carotene and β-carotene accumulated.
