Changes in the content of a UV-absorbing substance in a marine alga which varied with the depth of its habitat in relation to changes in the chlorophylls and phy-coerythrin contents, changes in photosynthetic respiration during algal growth, and growth retardation of an algal frond by the addition of the substance to the culture medium, were examined. The results suggested that the substance plays some important roles in algal metabolism.
