GA_3 and cyclic AMP were found to promote the germination (in light) of light inhibited Phacelia tanacetifolia seed to the levels obtained with dark controls. The GA_3 and cyclic AMP promoted germination was inhibited by ABA and cycloheximide but not by 6-methyl purine. The hormone and the nucleotide were not required for the entire incubation period to obtain maximum germination. Theophylline and caffeine also promoted germination of these seeds and 8-bromo-adenosine cyclic AMP was found to be a better promoter of germination than cyclic AMP. Of a variety of nucleotides tested, only cyclic AMP promoted germination. This study supports the hypothesis that cyclic AMP is involved in some manner in GA_3-induced seed germination.
