A substance which supports the growth of a methionine-requiring mutant (strain No. 7) of Saccharomyces cerevisiae was isolated and crystallized from a culture broth of another methionine auxotroph (strain No. 28). The active principle was identified as O-acetylhomoserine by comparing its chemical and biochemical properties with those of an authentic sample.
