When each mating strain of Chlamydomonas sp. was incubated in a nitrogen-free medium, its sexuality was separately induced by light. Studies were made on the mechanism of this induction with the following results. (1) At 20℃, both mating strains required light for the induction; no sexuality being observed in the dark. (2) DCMU did not appreciably inhibit induction and aeration with CO_2-free air stimulated it. Thus, this induction is not related to the process of photosynthesis. (3) At 4℃, incubation in the dark in a nitrogen-free medium for 24 hr induced sexuality. Prolonged incubation at a low temperature in the dark can replace the effect of light physiologically.
