Effect of preincubation UV irradiation of abscisic acid and gibberellin A_3 on α-amylase induction in barley half-seeds

A 24 hr preincubation UV (254 nm) irradiation of RS-ABA and GA_3 solutions completely negated the inhibitory effect of ABA on GA_3 induced α-amylase production with barley half-seeds. This irradiation, however, caused no significant inhibition of GA_3-induced α-amylase production. UV treatment of an extract from Tulipa indicated that this technique can be used to photooxidize ABA-like substances present in plant extracts.
