Ethylene increased the peroxidase activity in extracts from cotton plants (Gossypium kirsutum L.) pre-treated with the gas. The response was greatest in young leaves and plant fractions containing petioles and abscission zones. Ethylene also increased the peroxidase activity of extracts of cotton cotyledonary node explants pre-treated with the gas. These data parallel some earlier reports on IAA-oxidase activity of ethylene-treated plants. Disc gel electrophoresis of crude extracts of ethylene-treated cotton seedlings revealed both quantitative and qualitative changes in peroxidase isozymes from tissues treated with the gas. The possible functional role of peroxidase increased by ethylene treatment is discussed in relation to leaf abscission.
