Flowering responses of Lemna pcrpusilla strain 6746, a short-day plant, and L. gibba strain G3, a long-day plant, to nitrate concentration in Hoagland's type medium with or without EDTA, were compared. Maximum flowering of L. perpusilla under SD occurred at higher nitrate concentrations than did colony proliferation. Even under CL, L. perpusilla grown at sub-optimal nitrate concentrations for colony proliferation, flowered irrespective of the presence of EDTA which reduces flowering. Unlike L. perpusilla. L. gibba failed to flower under SD at any nitrate concentration whether or not EDTA was added. Under CL, however, L. gibba flowered at almost any nitrate concentration with or without EDTA. Double optima for nitrate concentration was exhibited in the presence of EDTA; optimal concentration for colony proliferation came between the two optima for flowering. We concluded that the nitrogen level of the medium is important in regulating flowering of duckweeds, and that the effect of EDTA, if any, may primarily be on colony proliferation and only secondarily or antagonistically on flowering.
