The fatty acid synthesizing system from developing soybean cotyledons was fractionated into a precipitate fraction and a supernatant fraction using carbowax-4000. Both fractions were necessary for fatty acid synthesis. The supernatant fraction was heat stable, non-dialyzable and lost its activity when incubated with pronase. Fatty acid synthesis required NADH and NADPH as well as ATP. KHC0_3 and MnCl_2. The crude enzyme produced stearic and oleic acid while the recombined system produced predominatly stearic acid.
