Cells in cultures of haploid strains of Saccharomyces cerevisiae in stationary phase were separated into interface fraction and pellet fraction by density gradient centrifugation. Cells in pellet fraction expanded in response to yeast sexual hormone and animal sex hormones, whereas cells in interface fraction did not.
