Mesocotyl elongation in paddy rice seedlings of the japonica type was markedly stimulated by high temperature pre-treatment of seeds. Examination of the number of parenchyma cells per one cell layer in longitudinal sections of mesocotyl revealed that stimulation may be mainly caused by cell multiplication.
