Charles the Bald warmly patronized abbeys. Among them the abbey of Saint Denis was an eminent art center, where Liuthard and many excellent craftsmen worked. They developed their style from that of Palace School of Aachen. The figures are represented in an expressionistic manner. It was not enough for the craftsmen to tell the story. Beyond this, they desired to indicate the Christian Love in the picture space. To emphasize the point of the theme, they set a series of surrounding figures, a kind of current, concentrated toward the central being and all the figures resign themselves to the relationship of the current. They move in all directions, even vertically and sometimes pile up without the dimensional depth. They are free from any restriction in the real space. Thus the character of the classical figure changed drastically. We find here the same "Kunstwollen" as in the Celtic bookilluminations. The figures are treated as one motif in their original ornamental system. By this treatment the craftsmen could express the abstract idea-the deep spirituality-with fervent movements and excitement.
