CO-OP Chemical Co. LTD has commercialized synthetic smectite and micas. Synthetic smectite (SW) has been produced as very fine particle using hydrothermal synthesis method under relatively low pressure and temperature. Synthetic micas have been produced by the intercalation method developed originally using the mixture of talc and silicofluoride, and by two kinds of synthetic ways, one was formed as expandable mica 'ME' from Na_2SiF_6 and the other one was formed as non-expandable mica 'MK' from K_2SiF_6. These synthetic smectite and micas have common character properties like high whiteness, high purity and high heat-resistance. These products are of good quality with uniform physical and chemical properties. Possible control of properties by variation of synthesis condition is also achievable. Because of excellent expandable nature of these materials, organic and inorganic materials with molecular size can be intercalated into the interlayer sites of SW and ME, which make the organic and inorganic complexes suitable for industrial applications.
