Generation and morphology of clay minerals in the natural world have been imitated by many research workers, and a number of the syntheses thereof by a variety of ways or techniques were attempted by them. Recent years advancement on clay researches and experimentations have discovered the syntheses of smectite, mica and kaolinite in industrial scale. A kind of 1:1-type tri-subgroup clay minerals was synthesized by the present author et al. It is called fraipontite. It has a two-layers structure similar to kaolinite, but being scarcely known to the general public as compared with kaolinite. Al-lizardite having a structure similar to fraipontite can be synthesized in the same manner, however, in case of fraipontite Mg is substituted by Zn in its structural composition. Fraipontite is easily synthesized by hydrothermal or coprecipitation reaction, and has both properties of solid acid and base from its chemical composition and structure. In order to display such characteristic properties as much as possible, the present author et al intended to make the microcrystals of fraipontite monodispersed and porous by compositing with silica gel. As a result of this method, the synthesis and the composite technology of fraipontite as a kind of 1:1-type tri-subgroup clay minerals have been closely tied in with the applications as an excellent amphoteric adsorbent.
