Thermogravimetric studies of an expansive clay soil from Adelaide (South Australia) indicate one major dehydroxylation event. Comparing the weight loss at this event with standard (API) montmorillonites allows a relatively accurate determination of the geotechnically-unde-sirable montmorillonite type minerals to be made.
