Sediment traps were deployed at two sites at depths of 1,592m (Site 1) or 1,761m (Site 2) in the West Caroline Basin from June 4,1991 to April 15, 1992. A sediment core was collected from the same location as the sediment trap Site 1. In this paper,we describe the clay-sized mineral composition of samples from the sediment trap sites and the clay-mineral composition of the sediment core. The chemical composition and morphological features of the clay minerals are also described. Finally we discuss factors influencing sedimentary processes based on the clay-sized mineral composition and the chemical and morphological characteristics of the clay minerals.
