We review the compensation of NB and NW modes of TN LCDs. We have compared both cases and found that the compensation of a TN by a twisted discotic compensation film have unique advantages of lower operating voltage, a single film for both single- and two-domain TNs without the need of a black matrix to hide the disclination between two-domain TNs.
