A thiocyanogen solution can be stabilized for a few months when it is made free from ferric ion, which is introduced as impurity from commercial salts of thiocyanate. At the same time, lead thiocyanate, the intermediate in the preparation of a thiocyanogen solution, also becomes stable to photodecomposition by the removal of ferric ion. Elimination of ferric ion was guaranteed by steam distillation of hydrogen thiocyanate at a reduced pressure and the distillate was introduced into a lead acetate solution.
