Six o-(w-phenylalkyl) anilines, having one to six methylene groups, were subjected to Pschorr reaction under a set of conditions to synthesize corresponding o, o'-methyl-ene-bridged biphenyls including two new compounds, dibenzo [a, c] cyclononane and dibenzo [a, c] cyclodecane. In the Pschorr syntheses, the highest yield of 9,10-dihydrophenanthrene, having two methylene groups, was confirmed. Ultraviolet (UV) and nuclear magnetic resonance spectral studies of the bridged biphenyls suggested that each of the two new compounds presumably presents preferentially in the conformation having a highly twisted pivot bond in the solution.
