Superoxide dismutase was prepared from Lactobacillus acidophilus CRL 358. An approximately 191-fold increase in the specific activity of the enzyme was achieved. The extract purified to apparent homogenity and exhibited a single band following polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis which detected superoxide dismutase activity. The apparent molecular weight determined by filtration was about 160000 dalton (Da).
