The first translation of Russian literature from the original was made in 1883, (2years before the first translation of Futabatei,) by Takasu Jiske. But his translation from "Captain's daughter" (Pushkin) did not leave any deep influence on the Japanese literature or culture. The auther finds some of the reasons, considering the circumstances in early Meiji.
