Edward M. Gallaudet who was a president of the National College for the Deaf-mute went to Europe for the purpose of the investigating the teaching methods of language for the deaf. He drew up a report on the state of deaf education in Europe. He made a proposal for the combined method of speech and sign. What is the combined methods? What is the substructure of his combined method? He recommends the speech method to the deaf education. But he loves sign language and relies on the use of sign language both in the classroom and outside. He evaluated that the best method was the one based mainly on sign adding speech to a greater or less extent. Writer of this article assured that the competent channel of communication is approved sign language of the deaf. His mother, Sophia, had an important effect upon Edward's personality. She was a very good model of deaf persons for him. The real philosophy of Dr. Gallaudet, which recommended the speech, seems to be similar and close to the articulation method. However, that is not actually the case. He proposed the instruction of speech on the basis of the philosophy of the manual method.
