The aims of this study are (a) analyzing History-Social Science Curriculum, which includes geographical content and aims at promoting cross-cultural understanding, to make clear the way of it in geography education, and (b) making clear the relation between geographic way of thinking and cross-cultural understanding. The contents of this paper are as follows; I. Introduction II. Geographical Approach to Promote Cross-cultural Understanding: Analyzing History-Social Science Curriculum in the U. S. 1. Cultures in Geography Education 2. Elements of Cross-cultural Understanding in Geography Education 3. Geographical Approach for Cross-cultural Understanding in "History-Social Science" III. Cross-cultural Understanding from the Perspective of Geography. 1. Cross-cultural Understanding and Its Basic Elements 2. Perspectives of Cross-cultural Understanding in Geographic Way of Thinking 3. Ways of Geography Education to Promote Cross-cultural Understanding IV. Conclusion History-Social Science Curriculum is designed to include geographical content into history education; this way of study can get rid of the mind which views cultures from the standpoint of developmental extent, and can help students understand cultures relatively. And it was made clear that this way of study can correct the tendency to understand cultures stereotypically. And, six viewpoints of geography education are mentioned which are expected to promote cross-cultural understanding. For instance, many-sided inquiry into cultural phenomena is connected with flexible ways of consideration, and synthetic study on the status and changes of a cultural phenomenon stimulates the understanding of originality or value of the culture. It is important to view one's own culture from foreign perspectives, and a global and structural way of viewing is also important, Approaches of geography education or common features between cultures and their backgrounds, and the methods of humanistic geography should be incorporated into general geography education.
