Trillium hagae is a putative natural hybrid and its progenitors are thought to be T. kamtschaticum Pall. (2n=10) and T. tschonoskii Maxim. (2n=20). Artificial crossings were made between these putative progenitors and the progenies were grown to maturation. Isoenzymes and ct-DNAs were investigated to demonstrate genetic relationship among progenies and progenitors. These results together with an investigation as to the F_2 generation made by naturally occurring progeny of T. hagae suggest that it has descended from the above progenitors and the mother is T. kamtschaticum, and that the taxon would have little chance to play any more roles for further evolutionary steps.
