Adults of Semanotus japonicus LACORDAIRE overwintering in xylem were transferred from outdoors or similar conditions to 2 photoperiod regimes at 20℃ to elucidate the characteristics of their diapause. The transfer was conducted on the 15th day of every month form October or November 1984 to March 1985. When incubated on the same day males generally emerged faster than females. The adults overwintering in killed trees of Cryptomeria japonica emerged faster and more synchronously at a photoperiod of LD 16 : 8 as the date of transfer was delayed. At LD 16 : 8 the responses of the adults, which had been inoculated upon small bolts of C. japonica as 1st instar larvae, were similar to those of the adults in killed trees. There was no difference in the average period required for emergence between two adult groups incubated on December 15 and January 15. However, the difference in response between the insects in trees and bolts made it difficult to determine the time of diapause termination.
