Life history patterns of 10 species of the subtribe Carabina were studied at several localities in the Kinki district, western Japan. Four different life history patterns were described in terms of breeding type, larval development and larval diet. Six Carabus (Ohomopterus) species, C. dehaanii, C. yaconinus, C. uenoi, C. maiya-sanus, C. iwawakianus and C. yamato, were spring breeders with no larval hibernation and their larvae fed on earthworms. Apotomopterus porrecticollis was also a spring breeder without larval hibernation, and the larva fed on insect larvae. Two Lepto-carabus species, L. kumagaii and L. procerulus, were autumn breeders with larval hibernation and their larvae fed on insect larvae. Damaster blaptoides was a spring breeder without larval hibernation, the larva feeding on land snails.
