The relationship of the lineage of Ishigaki Is., okinawensis FRUHST. of the Papilio (Achillides) bianor complex with the Tokyo lineage, dehaanii C. et R. FELDER was studied to clarify its phylogenetic relationship and degree of evolutionary divergence by morphological, genetic, and electrophoretic examinations. Some individuals from Okinawa Is., ryukyuensis FUJIOKA and dried adult specimens from Japan and its adjacent areas and China were likewise examined comparatively. The shape of harpe in the male genitalia and SV setae in the larval chaetotaxy of the Ishigaki lineage are different from those of the Tokyo one, and the former character is common to those of the Yaeyama Iss. and Lan-yu Is. populations. The hybridization of Ishigaki ♀×Tokyo ♂ produced fertile males and less number of sterile females, and this was true in the reciprocal crossing except for a reversed sex ratio. The number of chromosomes in the hybrid males varied excessively ranging from 32 to 58. Electrophoretic patterns of adult esterases showed a slight but distinguishable difference between the two lineages. These facts indicate the allopatric speciation of okinawensis in the Japanese P. bianor complex on the Yaeyama Islands.
