The two synhospitalic Drosophilella species, alocasiae and xenalocasiae, inhabit the same spadix of Alocasia odora in Okinawa, Japan. Relative abundance of adult flies throughout the year, larval distribution on the host spadix, potential fecundity, duration of pre-adult period and aestivation during the non-flowering season of the two species were compared in order to clarify the interspecific relationship between the two species. There was a clear difference between the two species in the preference of larval microhabitats : alocasiae tended to prefer the central part of spadix while xenalocasiae the lower part. Seasonal changes of individual numbers and potential fecundities were similar in the two species, and correlated with the abundance of host spadices available. D. alocasiae was much more abundant than D. xenalocasiae. This is partly due to higher fecundity and shorter pre-adult period in alocasiae.
