Polygynous colonies of Vespa affinis indosinensis PEREZ are reported as the first record of the polygyny in the genus Vespa from Sumatra. In young nests, only one, sometimes two, out of two to five queens of each nest were functional with fully developed ovaries. In mature nests, all two to five queens of each nest had full spermathecae and fully developed ovaries.
