The tooth number of sexcombs was examined, using many populations of Drosophila simulans. The tooth number of American populations was fewer than that of other populations. The crosses between high and low tooth number strains suggested that this morphological character was controlled by many genes (polygenic system) on autosomes without maternal effects or significant dominance. In addition, the tooth number of sexcombs was not significantly correlated with wing length or mating ability. The origin of Japanese simulans is discussed.
