The males of many noctuid moths possess a pair of brush-organs, releasing a sort of sex pheromone, on the second abdominal segment. The present paper deals with the distributions and the state of development of the organs in about 260 Japanese noctuid moths (so-called Trifidae subfamilies) and refers of their relations to the taxonomy of the Noctuidae. About 30 percent of the species examined have well developed brush-organs. The presence of the organs is restricted within three subfamilies of Trifidae : Hadeninae, Cuculliinae, and Amphipyrinae. Hence it can be considered that the brush-organs have a value as a taxonomic character.
