The hesperiid, nymphalid and all butterfly species-abundance data obtained in Sao Paulo, Brazil were well described by FISHER'S logarithmic series and PRESTON'S truncated discrete lognormal distribution. The compound Poisson lognormal distribution given by BULMER was also fairly fitted to the data. The number of missing species estimated from the Poisson lognormal distribution was much larger than that estimated by PRESTON'S law. It is unknown, however, which is more plausible estimate since any faunal record of butterflies in the outskirts of Sao Paulo city has not been presented yet.
