The 1st and 3rd instar larvae of the pine caterpillar, Dendrolimus spectabilis, were 4.7 and 2.7 times, respectively, as susceptible as the 6th instar to commercial Bacillus thuringiensis product. The relationship between the LC_<50>'s and the days after ingestion by the instars showed similar parameters. No mortality occurred within 24 hours after ingestion, but food consumption was highly suppressed. Food consumption gradually recovered when the larvae were fed fresh untreated pine needles. The anti-feeding effect of B. thuringiensis was a transitory and a reversible property. This effect may be included in the lethal action of B. thuringiensis for younger larval instars. In an experiment conducted in a greenhouse, two B. thuringiensis products, Thuricide HPSC and E-61, greatly reduced the damage to the host plant caused by 5th instar larvae.
