In the green rice leafhopper, Nephotettix cincticeps, the influence of parental age upon offspring was studied under two different constant conditions (25℃, 70% RH, 24 hr lighting and 30℃, 70% RH, 16 hr lighting). Characters of offspring were compared within and among ovipositional cycles found by Murai & Kiritani (1970). Those characters were also compared among different age groups originating from mothers of different ages. In each ovipositional cycle, egg size and duration of the egg stage did not change systematically. Hatchability, however, had a tendency to be high at the beginning of each cycle. Although the egg size decreased both at 25℃ and 30℃ with increase in the order of the ovipositional cycle, duration of the egg stage was prolonged only at 25℃. F_1 offspring originated from aged parents showed inferior characters such as low hatchability and weakness to starvation until the early nymphal stage. Under unfavourable conditions, F_1 offspring originated from aged parents showed remarkably inferior characters, such as high nymphal mortality, long preoviposition period, low fecundity and short longevity. In contrast, the influence of parental age was not so severe under favourable conditions. Influence of parental age upon the flight duration of F_1 females, reared under favourable conditions, was not clear. Their duration of flight was longer on the 3rd day after emergence than on the 8th day. Accumulative aging influence of the preceding two generations upon F_2 offspring was not detected under favourable conditions.
