Many species of Lonchaea have been reported as predators of bark weevils and bark beetles since 1870 (Perris), but the author doubted the predatory habit of Lonchaea scutellaris Rondani. Experiments were carefully made to know first whether the solitary larva of L. scutellaris attacks the living larva of the bark weevil Pissodes obscurus in the larval gallery, and second whether the aggregated fly-larvae become aggressive. Results of both experiments were negative. Then a still another experiment was attempted to find out the food on which the fly-larva feeds and grows. It was found that the fly-larva grew by feeding on dead weevil-larvae, and it is concluded that L. scutellaris is not a predator but a zoonecrophagous insect. Acknowledgments. The author is very grateful to Mr. C. Nishiguchi, Institute of Forest Zoology, Faculty of Agriculture, University of Tokyo, and to Mr. N. Fukuhara, National Institute of Agricultural Sciences, Tokyo, for their valuable advices, and to Dr. J. F. McAlpine, Entomological Research Institute, Central Experimental Farm, Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, for his identification of Lonchaea.
