A well-known sugar-cane borer, Proceras venosatus (Walker) which is distributed in Malaya, Borneo, China, Taiwan and India has been found in Kyushu, Japan recently. This species is one of the five sugar-cane borers in Taiwan, and its control has been endeavouring for many years. A sugar-cane borert which has been recorded under the name of Diatraea striatalis in Taiwan is though to be the present species. Four adult specimens of this species were found among the collections of a light trap in Yoshii, Ukiha-gun, Fukuoka Prefecture. The adult characters were described here for the future investigations, though the biology of this species is unknown in Japan. In Taiwan, three plants-maize, German mille and Miscanthus sinensis Anderss.-have been known as the host plants of this species besides sugarcane. Sugar-canes are cultivated in southern part of Kyushu, the Amami Islands and in the Ryukyus. There is, however, no cultivation of sugar-cane in the locality where the present specimens were collected. It had been cultivated there till about 10 years before. It is supposed that this species may attack the wild plants around paddy fields. This species may be distinguished from the species of Chilo by the absence of ocelli, and in having sub-rounded frons in head, and the vein Sc of forewing anastomosing with vein Rl. Two other species of the genus Proceras, indicus Kapur and sacchariphagus Bojer, are distributed in India-Ceylon and Madagascar-Mauritius respectively, so there may be no confusion with these species in Japan.
