Chylizosoma sp. is a leaf miner of Hosta lancifolia Engler and other Hosta spp. Egg : -Oval, about 1.4 mm. long, milky white, with two longitudinal grooves and net like marking on the chorion. Larva : -Milky white, length of 1st instar about 1.2 mm., 2nd about 2 mm., the 3rd about 5 mm. Puparium : -Long oval ; shiny red-brown ; body length about 5 mm. Eggs are deposited in a mass being arranged in a short arc line on the lower surface of a leaf. Hatched larvae take position of side by side and make a common broad linear mine, but afterwards they disperse in one mine and make a blotch mine. They consume almost whole mesophyll leaving a very small amount of the spongy parenchym, and consequently a leaf sometimes shows an empty bag-like appearance. Larvae rebuilt mines on new leaves when they are forced by starvation. Mature larvae emerge from the leaf for pupation on or in the ground, but sometimes they pupate within the mines of leaves. Egg stage is about 1 week in summer. Larval stage is about 12 days (daily mean air temperatures 19°-21℃), about 8 days (daily m. a. temp. 24°-26℃). Pupal stage is about 14 days (daily m. a. temp. 19°-23℃) Duration of one generation is about one month in summer. Longevity of the adults : -♂7 days (daily m. a. temp. 11°-19℃), ♀7 days (daily m. a. temp. 13°-19℃), ♂2 days and ♀1.5 days (daily m. a. temp. 18°-25℃). This species passes winter in the stage of puparium, and adult flies emerge in April. We find usually 3-4 generations in a year. The habitat is restricted to the mountain region where daily mean air temperature is not over about 25℃ even in summer.
