7. Radiation Therapy… Protecting the Foetus

Patients came for radiation treatment in their forth to sixth month of pregnancy. The type of diseases presented were ca. parotid, ca. nasopharynx, ca. post nasal space and ca. breast. The prescribed radiation were 6 MV photon and 12 MeV electron beam respectively with dose ranging from 2000cGy to 5000cGy. The desired to have the first offspring before the expiring of their remaining functioning lives, the impact of religious believes and the social cultures have ruled out the possibility of the patients having an induced abortion before the commencement of their radiation treatment. Radiation protection of the foetus were required. The problems of procedures, shielding set up and the outcome of the protection results will be discussed. The anxiety of the patients before, during and after the radiation treatment will be highlighted.
