Though Cr-Mn austenite steel containing silicon and vanadium is a steel which can be used for 18-8 Cr-Ni austenite steel, ist weldability has not yet been studied. The authors studied the effects on the weldability of Cr-Mn austenite steel and also those on composition and structure of welded joints, exerted by various materials, commonly used in coating, such as CaF_2,CaCO_3,MnO_2,MnCO_3,TiO_3,Na-titanate, K_4[Fe(CO)_6], starch and ferro-manganese, useing welding rod of following composition; 0.44% C, 0.71% Si. 16.16%. Mn, 11.12% Cr and 0.72% V. After many experiments the authors select the following as abest coating; 28.6% CaF_2,21.4% CaCO_3,10% MnO_2,10% Na-titanate, 2% starch, 10% ferro-manganese, 5% K_4[Fe(CO)_6] and 13% wateraglass. Cr-Mn steel plates containing 0.20% C, 1.22% Si, 17.60% Mn, 13.18% Cr and 0.66% V are arc welded under different conditions by using welding rod. Tensile, hardness and macao-structural tests of the welded joints prepared as above was undertaken.
