The authors have developed a consumable electrode water jet cutting technique as one of underwater cutting methods. Underwater cuttings of mild steel and aluminum were carried out at a water depth up to 200 m. Welder used was a DC constant voltage one and electrode wire was a 2.4 mm diam. steel wire. To obtain good cutting result at great water depth, arc voltage should be increased 0.5-1V every water depth of 10 m. Underwater cutting of mild steel by aluminum wire was also achieved at water depth up to 90 m. The drosses were not recognized at a cut surface, which was better than one obtained using steel wire. Judging from the experiment cutting could be done at water depth up to 200 m and more.
